From the Captain

The Golf Club has a more ‘normal’ feel to it these days. Whilst still in the grips of the Covid pandemic: social distancing, wearing of masks, bunkers as GUR etc, there is still a feeling that we are progressing through this awful unprecedented period.

With the Competitions now firmly re-established and the opening of the bar there seems to be a buzz around the club again. This was clearly demonstrated last weekend when we held our Club Championships for the Men. Many members remained after their rounds to applaud the winners as they were presented with their trophies late on a Sunday afternoon.

I am pleased to see we now have Gemma fully up and running as our Bar Manager following her successful endeavours at re-opening the Halfway House. I have received many complimentary comments from members and guests alike on both being open and the service provided by the team. We are working hard to add the final instalment to our offering – getting the restaurant open. I am hoping for good news on that front soon

The course has been kept in great condition by our hardworking green keeper team. Daniel and the guys are constantly striving to provide us with a course to be proud of, supported by the Tuesday crew of volunteers. It is a great feeling when speaking to members of visiting societies who comment “the best kept course I have played this year”. I can only echo those comments. One request, please remember these guys are working on our behalf, please respect them when they are working in front of you on the course and allow them to finish what they are doing before playing your ball.

Through this Covid-19 period, since reopening, we have seen an increase in the numbers of visitors playing the course. We have been mindful of the impact this has on the members and also the impact on our finances. We are continually monitoring the situation to ensure our members are not affected by the visitor numbers. We will adjust visitor access times if we feel there is a real need to.

Competitions Report

What a busy month July has been for competitions. All the sections have been busy catching up with their respective comps.

In the Ladies section Ros Riley and Christine Rowell won the 4BBB with a creditable 42 points. In the Ladies Club Championships Pat Silburn secured the Division 1 title whilst Sarah Parsell won the Division 2 title. Congratulations Ladies.

In the Men’s section we have seen some great scoring to win trophies. The Secretary’s Shield was won by Ian Coleman with a score of 40 points on count back from Ian Goldsmith. Dave & Harry Turner secured victory in the Berridge Bowls, again on count back, with a fine 48 points from Josh Davis & Paul Hawkes. The 2020 Dawson Trophy saw Bob Svarups return a very good 68, in hurricane conditions, to take the trophy, whilst Grahame Eadie went one better by posting a 67, playing off 3, to secure the July Medal. The July Stableford competition saw a fantastic 48 point haul recorded by Neil March to win by 2 points from Harry Turner.

On Club Championship day the Cummins Cup was comfortably won by Paul Hawkes with a five shot lead. In The Cotton Cup & Potter Bowl, the Mens Club championship, Charlie Fowler secured victory in both Nett & Gross competitions.

Hole-in-Ones recorded during the period (reported to the Captain) Micheal Jursa on the 9th, Mike Thompson on the 13th & Terry Beckett on the 3rd. Well done chaps!
